Both stars and ordinary users noticed the sharp drop in their Twitter followers. The purge wave started on Wednesday and could not be left unnoticed by anyone. The popular social network has decided to clear bots and suspicious profiles that make the platform vicious.

If the users who are blocked don’t confirm that they are human, their accounts will be wiped out without a way for recovery. Twitter’s General Counsel Vijaya Gadde said that the majority of “live” accounts have already lost or will lose no more than four followers as a result of these measures.

The measures have hit the celebrities extremely heavily. Singers Lady Gaga and Cathy Perry lost respectively 2.5 and 2.8 million followers, and former US President Barack Obama – about 2.1 million. Of course the Twitter has suffered the most from this general cleaning. The company has lost 7.7 million followers.

Overall, Twitter has deprived 6 percent of the accounts. On average each user has lost four followers.

“Twitter’s decision will have an immediate impact: Beginning on Thursday [July 12], many users, including those who have bought fake followers and any others who are followed by suspicious accounts, will see their follower numbers fall. While Twitter declined to provide an exact number of affected users, the company said it would strip tens of millions of questionable accounts from users’ followers. The move would reduce the total combined follower count on Twitter by about 6 percent — a substantial drop.” The company explains.

Company representatives, however, are firmly convinced that mass cleanliness will help make to make them more reliable and more transparent. This is particularly relevant after a series of fake news and bots scandals.

“The number of followers must be accurate and reasonable, we want to promote trust and constructive dialogue,” Twitter says. Post from: GizBrain
