Patent trolls have won a huge victory over Apple after a Texas court has ruled that the giant has to pay a large $500 million to a company carrying the the name VirnetX Holding Corp.

Created specifically to collect lesser-known patents and then sue others for violations in jurisdictions that are conducive to similar kinds of deeds. The patents are related to secure communications technology through FaceTime, VPN on Demand and iMessage, and the lawsuit has been going on for a long time.

However, the latest episode in the saga seems to be final, given the decision in favor of the Holding. However, Apple may not pay right now – the case was already being watched when the US Patent Office adopted a decision declaring the patents invalid, so maybe the Appeals Court will look again at the issue.

VirnetX, in a SEC filing, described its approach to making money by saying its “portfolio of intellectual property is the foundation of our business model.” The company’s stock rose 44 percent today on news of the federal ruling in its favor, Bloomberg says.

Meanwhile, the CEO of VirnetX is still celebrating the win. “The evidence was clear,” Kendall Larsen said to reporters following the announcement of the verdict. “Tell the truth and you don’t have to worry about anything.” Post from: GizBrain. Image: Seekingalpha
