Facebook postpones Smart Speaker launch because of Data Leaks
According to Bloomberg, Facebook is temporarily suspending the development of its smart speaker with whom was want to join rest of the competition companies. It was planned the device to be a competitor of Amazon Echo, Google Home and HomePod the plans was to be unveiled at the F8 event very soon.
However, given the scandals with the leak of personal data, it is logical to be delay – it is unlikely that right now a voice assistant with video chat option and facial recognition that constantly listens to everything going on in the home will be well received.
For the moment, the prototype is only known as Portal, but in order to get to the market and gain consumer confidence, Facebook will not only have to wait for the scandal over Cambridge Analytica to slip away, but also to show clearly the measures they have taken to do not repeat.
Smart assistants are one of the hottest technologies at the moment, but the company that offers them on the market has proven strong security principles of the personal data they require.
At the developer conference, set for May 1, the company will also need to explain new, more restrictive rules around what kinds of information app makers can collect on their users via Facebook’s service.
