Is the Canon M50 the Biggest Disappointment?
After many criticisms and recommendations from Canon’s users, they finally introduced their first mirror-less camera with the capability to shoot at 4K resolution. At this point, the company offered this option only for high-end DSLRs, and this has led to disappointment with brand supporters.
The EOS M50 is a compact, mirror-less 24.1 megapixel camera that features a new DIGIC 8 processor to help run faster. The interesting thing about this one is that we’re seeing a more budget-friendly version of the brand that can shoot video at 3840×2160 at 24 frames per second or at 1920×1080 at 60 frames per second. And is positioned in the entry level segment.
The camera is equipped with an OLED optical viewfinder and a Dual-Pixel autofocus system. If you still prefer to use a screen rather than a viewfinder, the M50 has a touchscreen display that can be turned in different directions, making it useful for vlogging.
The camera also feature, a 3.5mm external microphone jack and HDMI port that let you plug in a monitor and watch what you’re shooting. Unfortunately, the Canon M50 does not offer a USB Type C port. However, for easy connection to other devices, the camera has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC capability.
Other feature is 120 frames per second slow motion video at the impressive “720p” resolution and quiet aperture.
Although the Canon M50 has the ability to shoot at 4K resolution, Dual Pixel autofocus can not be used as it is limited to capturing video at 1080p. Instead, a 4K video will be used for autofocus that works on the principle of contrast detection make it practically unusable for vlogging.
The ISO setting range is 100 to 25,600, and can be increased to 51,200 in certain modes, although the higher the ISO, the more the image quality gets worse. Canon has also added a burst mode function that lets you make several sequential frames, with the maximum speed at the M50 being 10 frames per second or 7.4 frames if you use autofocus.
The Canon M50 comes at $780 for the body only and comes in two colors – black or white. The price with included EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5 – 6.3 lens is $900, with an option for two lenses in a set with the body at a price of $1250. The device will be released in April this year.
