Samsung Denies Slowing Down Older Smartphones
Samsung has denied allegations that it deliberately slows down its old smartphone models through software upgrades. Last week against the South Korean company was launched an investigation by antitrust authorities in Italy as a result of user signals.
Until recently, Apple was the center of the scandal, against the company was launched various charges in a number of countries for deliberately slowing older smartphone models. Samsung has denied this practice since the first accusations against the Cupertino Corporation.
But now has to repeat these allegations for investigation in Italy. “We will fully cooperate with Italian Authority for Market and Competition’s investigation in Italy to clarify the facts.”
Last month, Samsung released a statement saying, “Product quality has been and will always be Samsung Mobile’s top priority. We ensure extended battery life of Samsung mobile devices through multi-layer safety measures, which include software algorithms that govern the battery charging current and charging duration.”
“We do not reduce CPU performance through software updates over the lifecycles of the phone.” said Samsung in a statement on Friday.
Apple has acknowledged that software updates on older iPhone models have a negative effect on the performance of the device. The company said it offered a battery replacement for $29.
At the same time, antitrust regulators in the United States, France, Italy, and South Korea have begun an investigation into breaking this practices of the technology giant. Samsung is currently facing such an investigation only in Italy.
Shares of Samsung Electronics fell 1.16% to 2,466,000 won on Friday, after hitting a four-month low of 2,410,000 won on Jan. 12. The benchmark KOSPI edged up 0.18% to 2,520.26 on Friday.
