Sales of iPhone X in the US goes to record low
Described as the future of smartphones, the new iPhone X does not seem to challenge traditional Apple products interest. A new study by the US company Cowen, found that the number of current iPhone owners in the US planning to buy the new model was the lowest in its research history.
The company is conducting surveys every quarter since 2013, and in its latest survey, which covers over 1,100 users, appears to be a bit worrying about Apple’s latest product. Cowen’s analysts attribute these historically low numbers to the price of the iPhone X, and the underwhelming changes in the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, compared to their predecessors:
“The moderating interest seems to reflect the higher price of the iPhone X and/or lack of compelling new features as the new iPhones collectively appear to have had only limited impact on 4Q17 sales.”
The iPhone X was announced in September and costs a thousand dollars and has not received any promotions or discounts from major US mobile operators. Finally, analysts conclude that Apple’s share of the smartphone market for September-November has actually dropped despite the release of three new models.
When Cowen asked survey respondents what kind of cell phone they will purchase next, the results showed that loyalty for the iPhone is nearing its lowest levels since the firm started doing its quarterly surveys. (Cowen and Company)
Interestingly, Cowen said its survey also showed that smartphone users overall are planning to hold on to their phones much longer than in the past. The firm said that the percent of postpaid respondents who plan to hold onto their phone for two years or more rose to 34.1%, notably up from the 23% who said they would in the same survey three years ago.
The Cowen analysts added that the trend appears to be driven by the introduction of equipment installment plans, which allow wireless users to more clearly see how much their phones cost.
