Magic Leap One Augmented Reality Headset Revealed
Magic Leap officially unveiled its first augmented reality glasses called Magic Leap One: Creator Edition. The glasses will be available in 2018 and while there is still no pre-orders (and there is no price announced), we can at least be among the first to know when they will be available.
Magic Leap One: Creator Edition promises to change the way people interact with the world around them by using augmented reality. The glasses are actually the ninth generation of this hardware, but this is only the first time they appear in the market as a final product.
Magic Leap was founded in 2011 by Rony Abovitz. Today, the company is estimated at nearly $6 billion, and has received $1.9 billion in funding. Over the past seven years, Magic Leap has been developing its augmented reality system, which has three components.
The Lightpack is a pocket-sized computer for which Abovitz say is “something close to the MacBook Pro or Alienware computer,” which would be amazing by comparing the size of the devices.
The glasses use transparent cells that the company calls “lightfield photonics” which according to Abovitz transform photons into a 3D nano-structure to generate an image in a certain space.
However, practically we have zero information about how the system actually works. What are its hardware specifications, CPU / GPU speed, and operating system. Can internal components be updated? Even more important, how is the device powered? What are the energy requirements? Is it fully mobile? What is the life of the battery? We need more explanations from Abovitz.
The Magic Leap website says there will be a SDK available at the beginning of 2018, but there is no data on the release date of the glasses. In August of this year, Business Insider sources, close to the company, claimed the system would be sold for $1,000-$1,500. But again these are just rumors.
