Apple’s Mac computers continue to be more resistant to virus attacks compare to Windows systems, according to a new report by security company McAfee. Despite the rise in the number of threats and infections, Mac remains relatively less affected by viruses than Windows computers.

In the first quarter of the year, the number of threats against Apple Mac computers has increased by 53%, McAfee said. The company has reported 700,000 cases of infections, but there has been a decline in the emergence of new variations of viruses for Mac OS.

Most of the viruses currently fall into the category of adware attached to applications downloaded by users. It is this type of applications responsible to the growth in the number of infections for Mac. However, although the adware is annoying to users, it does not damage the files.

However, the situation with Windows is much worse. In the first quarter, McAfee has reported approximately 700 million infections in different versions of Windows, which is 1000 times more than MacOS. This huge difference is explained by the much stronger security of MacOS to viruses, compared to Windows OS.

On network the most active are the worms, which are responsible for 24% of attacks, followed by DDoS attacks with 20% and direct attacks against browser with 23%. In about 8% of cases, are used Brute Force attacks, 7% are attacks by the SSL protocol, and 6% of network attacks rely on malware.

McAfee also looks at the origins of DDoS botnet attacks. It turns out that 39% of the botnets in the first quarter were located in the US. In second place with 10% is Germany, followed by China, South Korea and the Netherlands with 5%, Russia with 4%, Japan and the UK with 3%. Source: McAfee. Post from: GizBrain
