Android developers can now block rooted devices
Last week, Netflix bring a big surprise among Android enthusiasts by banning access for routed devices to their application. Now it turns out that this feature is part of Google’s new policy.
The Internet giant has added new functionality to the Google Play Console, which gives developers the ability to not allow access to their applications on devices that have not passed SafetyNet checks.
“Building innovative security features for Android app developers and their users continues to be a priority. As part of this effort, we provide SafetyNet attestation, an API for developers to remotely evaluate whether they are talking to a genuine Android device.” Says google developers blog. “We encourage developers to use SafetyNet attestations to augment their anti-abuse strategy.”
The new option is located at the Device Catalog menu on the Release Management tab, and allows developers to implement very precise criteria for which devices are supported for their application.
It’s now possible to exclude phones and tablets even on parameters like chipset or RAM. The most important factor is the SafetyNet check, which stops some emulators, routed phones and unlicensed devices.
Once they are added to the black list, these devices will not see the app in the Play Store. Such a move is definitely a big trouble for hundreds of thousands of routed handsets and it will be interesting to track the development of the topic.
