Hugo Barra Leaves Xiaomi and Returns to Silicon Valley
Today something surprising happened to those familiar with the personality and work of a technology expert named Hugo Barra. Barra, which occupies a leading position (VP) in the Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi, announced he is leaving his post to return to Silicon Valley, where he worked as vice president of management on Android Google Product until 2013.
Here’s what he said about his stay in China:
“THANKS FOR A GREAT 3.5 YEARS, MI FANS — When Lei Jun and Bin Lin came to me nearly four years ago with the opportunity to help turn a young rockstar startup into a global player, I embarked on what has been the greatest and most challenging adventure of my life. I moved to Beijing, 6,500 miles out of my comfort zone in Silicon Valley, to build from scratch a startup team within a bigger startup. This journey has been nothing short of spectacular in every way, and I can proudly say that Xiaomi Global is the first baby I helped bring into the world.
But what I’ve realized is that the last few years of living in such a singular environment have taken a huge toll on my life and started affecting my health. My friends, what I consider to be my home, and my life are back in Silicon Valley, which is also much closer to my family. Seeing how much I’ve left behind these past few years, it is clear to me that the time has come to return.”
Barra did many to improve global profile and integrity of Xiaomi. If you remember, when he started working in the company, it was widely mock like Apple copycat, but in the last three years the Chinese company establish its own style and last year we saw a very impressive smartphone called Mi Mix.
The position of Hugo Barra is already replaced by Xiang Wang, who is now senior vice president of Xiaomi. While international presence of Xiaomi is improving its position at home (in China) steady decline. Xiaomi dropped out of the rankings for the top five smartphone manufacturers in 2016 and is not even mentioned in the latest report from IDC market share.
Maybe Hugo Barra saw that Xiaomi could not cope with the enormous competition of other smartphone manufacturers and chose to be reoriented towards a more developed and secure market. We expect soon to find out, and what will be the new workplace of Barra.
