Check out what’s inside in Oculus Rift VR Headset (video)
If you have spent $600 for the virtual reality Oculus Rift headset, you probably do not want to disassemble it. Fortunately there are other people who are dealing with this: iFixit. According to iFixit, Oculus Rift glasses are moderately easy to repair.
The team found that there are many cables, which can easily be damaged. However, iFixit gives 7 out of 10 points for repairability. Upon disassembly it becomes clear that the Oculus Rift does not use the same display as on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which was used for the DK2 early prototype. Instead Rift has two custom displays, which are with diagonal of 90 mm each and 456 pixels per inch.
Virtual reality glasses feature a pair of hybrid Fresnel lenses that make these 90 mm displays seem distant and bigger. Fresnel lenses are a series of concentric circles that help to bend the light from the display.
Also these Fresnel lenses have different thickness, which means that you can change the focus of your Rift, simply move your head up and down.
iFixit also provided a list of the chips that you will find inside the Rift:
• Toshiba TC358870XBG 4K HDMI to MIP Dual-DSI Converter
• Cypress CYUSB3304 USB 3.0 Hub Controller
• ST Microelectronics STM32F072VB ARM Cortex-M0 32-bit RISC Core Microcontroller
• Winbond W25Q64FVIG 64 Mb Serial Flash Memory
• Nordic Semiconductor nRF51822 Bluetooth Smart and 2.4GHz proprietary SoC
• CMedia CM119BN USB Audio Controller
• Bosch Sensortec BMI055 6-axis Inertial Sensor
