On May 14, a meeting took place of the Minister of Communications Nikolay Nikiforov with representatives of Finnish business and Russian IT sector, which discussed the creation of an independent operating system that responds to Russia’s plans to import substitution. Russian specialists will develop the new system and the basis for future product will likely use the operating system open source for smartphones and tablets Sailfish, developed by Jolla.

The government revealed that it expects Brazil, India and South Africa to participate in the project.

Nikiforov didn’t announce what will be the name of the new operating system, but confirmed that it’s a separate platform, not the implementation of the current version of the Sailfish.

He explained that 95% of the phones in Russia operate ‘import’ operating systems such as Android and iOS. Communication minister thinks that by 2025 the import platforms will be 50%.
