Scientists from around the world constantly finding new applications of impressive material graphene, which is yet to enter more widely in our everyday lives. Researchers now used it successfully in the manufacture of a new form of ice, using molecules of the material. Their project was implemented on a microscopic level, and the final product they create is named “Square Ice”.

Scientists choose this name because of the square structure of molecules and graphene layers that set it apart. The ice structure is produced at room temperature and is based on the idea that water vapor will pass through the graphene oxide, but will not allow helium and others related to the process gases. The researchers used graphene sheet on which poured water covered with another layer of material, even in its evaporation it remains “locked” between them.

In turn, this leads to the formation of the square ice structures which are flat and are significantly different from the pyramidal shape of the ice. Scientists have achieved this effect not only because of the unique properties of graphene, but also because of high atmospheric pressure applied. It remains to see what other applications they will find that amazing material in the coming years.
