This is the Russian YotaPhone 2, which was released in December 2014 The previous version of the smartphone surprise the mobile market by providing first two screens – a traditional LCD front and second with electronic ink (E-Ink) back. At last year’s MWC Russians Yota announced that they new model, which has been delayed and occur only in December. But the wait is worth it.
New YotaPhone 2 does not contain the element of surprise by the presence of two screens. However cleared almost all the shortcomings of its predecessor and raises the bar significantly.

At first glance YotaPhone 2 did not differ on the technical characteristics of the other flagship models of the competition last year. The smartphone features a 5-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. Behind him, the Russians have put Yota chipset Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad 2.3 GHz processor. RAM is 2 GB, and 32 GB is more space for storage. The rear camera is 8 MP, and the front is 2.1 MP. The battery is 2500 mAh, which is not much for a similar class smartphones. YotaPhone 2 and uses an older version of Android – 4.4.3 KitKat, it is not known whether there will soon be able to upgrade to the new operating system Android Lollipop. However, Russian developers rely on relatively light version of the platform, the amendments that have been made are more optimization e-ink screen than heavy allowances as most other manufacturers.

Front smartphone looks a lot like Nexus models – similar screen with rounded edges. Side features a stylish plastic housing, which, however, remains a very small part of the phone. The reason is that almost the entire back panel covers the second screen of electronic ink, which actually hidden the true capacity of YotaPhone 2.

+ Elegant design
+ Fully functional second touchscreen e-ink screen
+ Many options for the second screen
+ More durable battery, if used E-Ink

– The presence of two screens increases the risk of damage if dropped
– Hard to find cases for screens
– Characteristics of last year’s flagship slowly update on Android
– High price

It is 4.7 inches – slightly smaller than the main one, the reason is that there is room for 8 MP camera. The rear screen is fully capacitive sensor array, unlike his predecessor, who was unable to control touch screen. It is covered with impact-resistant glass Gorilla Glass 3, which covers the entire panel with the camera. Unlike before, where used the same glass, it has a different slightly rough surface. So holding it, did not feel that the back cover is actually covered with Gorilla Glass, unlike the iPhone 4 for example. The whole design is simple, and production appears stable – without edges or failure to comply elements.

Double combinations

Besides the well-enclosed design solutions for integrating second screen developer Yota significantly expand its functions. In the first model E-Ink display was significantly smaller and was not fully touch. In YotaPhone second possibility for complete control touch screen makes it equally as utility front AMOLED screen. Even when “asleep” front screen rear continues to function. This allows the user to review the basic information without using the AMOLED display, which saves significant energy and extend battery life.
E-Ink screen consists of two main components – YotaCover and YotaPanel.

The first is a kind of permanent wallpaper that stands released while the smartphone is switched on. To which were added four buttons for quick review of notifications – one for missed calls, messaging, e-mail and one for the other. The second component or layer is YotaPanel. His views and content can be adjusted depending on user preferences. This is done by different panels, which include several components – be it a large watch, tape the weather, another notification, calendar, battery status, etc. They may include various applications, such as Google Maps or special application for Self. The latter is actually a handy tool to shoot himself with a powerful smartphone with rear camera instead of a weak front. Users can order several panels, like screens of Android.

The settings of the various layers and YotaCover YotaPhone made in preloaded YotaHub. The process is simple and intuitive. Separately, Russian developers have added a special selection of apps optimized for the electronic screen by YotaApps. They include games such as chess, sudoku and 2024. There is a built-in RSS reader and one for electronic books.

The biggest surprise, however, is the option YotaMirror. It is activated by holding the central Home Button on the home screen of the Android interface and then a button to the left of Google Play. YotaMirror the opportunity to use and manage all functions of the operating system through the back screen with e-ink. Sounds great, but there’s a catch. Unlike specifically optimized applications and use of full panels Android of E-Ink is slower with a slower refresh rate of the image. But is a good option if you need to make any adjustments while the battery is nearing completion.

The price to be different

YotaPhone 2 unlike its predecessor is truly unique and – most importantly – completed device with full functionality. The combination of smartphone and e-reader in a very strong and fulfills the dream of not one or two technology enthusiasts.

This innovation, however, has its price – literally and figuratively. First, YotaPhone 2 relies on hardware that after the situation in Barcelona will be considered outdated. Although applications running smoothly, and the operating system itself, this is no guarantee that in time it will become new. Because it takes time to adapt to the new versions of Android for all the functions of Yota, it is very likely and the update to version 5.0 Lollipop platform to slow. Besides the processor, which is a model of more than a year, the camera will no longer be the tip of the ice cream, it does not allow shooting in 4K resolution or in slow motion.

Two different screen – AMOLED and E-Ink, raise the cost of the device and YotaPhone 2 approximates this indicator to the high-end smartphones now.  The high cost comes from the presence of a second screen. If you like the idea to have a smartphone and e-reader in one in order to save battery life – YotaPhone 2 is your choice. Otherwise, there are cheaper alternatives with similar characteristics, then Barcelona and new flagship, which will have better performance at similar prices.
