In an interview with Forbes Sundar Pichai of Google said that Google+ will continue to exist in its present form. The company did not reap great success with his social network, but users using separate elements of it. Pichai mentioned Hangouts and Photos, and does not exclude the possibility of gradual separation from the main social network.

He shares that Google has no plans to compete with Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp with Hangouts and even enjoy their success on Google Play. The product director fails to mention the crucial importance of China for the future of Google. Its main concern is freedom of speech and too aggressive government from the company “had problems”.

Q: There are other parts of Google +, like photos, which people seem to like but seem to have been dormant because they are part of the larger product.

A: We are actively working on all of these areas. To me, photos is an important area. I see that as a specific problem space that’s different from the [Google+] stream.

Q: Should we expect Google+ to remain as one big product?

A: I think increasingly you’ll see us focus on communications [Hangouts], photos and the Google+ stream as three important areas, rather than being thought of as one area.
