This week a federal jury in Texas awarded Apple to pay $532.9 million for violating three patents owned by patent company Smartflash. The jury in Tyler, Texas, where the seat of Smartflash, has determined that Apple uses patents Smartflash on iTunes without permission, which rejected the claims of Apple, that the patents are invalid.

These patents relate to digital rights management (DRM) data storage, as well as payment systems. Smartflash requested compensation of $852 million, which Apple’s lawyers describe as exorbitant amount. Apple has stated that the patents were worth only $4.5 million.

By Smartflash also claim that Apple deliberately used the patents without permission, as the company founder Patrick Rakz presented, more than ten years of Farudzhia Augustine, who later became director of security at Apple. Apple has stated that they will appeal the decision on Tuesday.

“Smartflash not create any products, no employees do not create jobs, do not have a US presence and exploit our patent system to seek royalties for technology invented by Apple”, says Apple spokeswoman Kristin Haget in a statement to Bloomberg Business. “We refuse to pay this amount to the company.”
