How Intel give voice to Stephen Hawking
“Do not you want a real computer?” This is the question that co-founder of Intel, Gordon Moore asks Stephen Hawking at a conference in 1997, soon see that the computer scientist who carries, uses a microprocessor, AMD. Thus began a long-standing partnership between Hawking and Intel, under which the company updated the technique of exercises every two years.
Hawking lost his voice in 1985 during a visit to CERN, where he developed pneumonia. The situation is so serious that the Geneva doctors directly ask his wife Jane prefers to discontinue the maintenance of his life. She refuses, Hawking is sent to Cambridge and, fortunately, doctors failed to resolve the infection. To vazstanovat breathing, however, they perform tracheotomy, breaking a hole in his throat, in which he permanently lost his speech.
Originally Hawking communicates with the aid of a special card, choosing letters and form words with the movements of his eyebrows. Then one of his doctors – Martin King – is associated with the California company Words Plus, developed a program for selecting the words and commands of the computer by using a handheld device. When the company understood that it comes to Hawking, they provide him with an earlier version of the technology called them Equaliser, head of the company which was developed especially for my wife’s mother, like Hawking suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
This software was later loaded portable system installed on one of the handles of the wheelchair Hawking to help physicist able to communicate at a speed of 15 words per minute. The software runs on an Apple II computer is connected to a speech synthesizer company called Speech Plus. In 2008, however, the hand of Hawking is so weakened that it can not even clicks on the device to enter words. Then а student invented a special device mounted on his glasses, and allowing it to communicate only with the muscle movements of your cheeks. Unfortunately, and thus a communication after some time loses its effectiveness. Therefore in 2011, Hawking wrote a letter to Moore with the question: “Lately my speech is very slow. Can Intel to help me in any way? ”
By the time Intel convened best experts and engage them with the ambitious task to return the voice of Hawking, it uses an interface called EZ Keys based on the digital keyboard and an algorithm to predict words as physicist uses muscle on his cheek to stop the cursor on the exact point you want to enter. This program allows to use Skype, to search for information in Firefox and even wrote his lectures in Notepad. This interface, however, does not allow even simple things like deleting misentry, a step back and so on.
Intel Labs researchers eventually decide to build this interface, he added opportunity to interpret not as the entered information as to the intentions of Hawking. Sounds like science fiction, but similar software used smartphone us when trying to guess what we want to write in SMS-s, for example. System called ASTER, but they need three attempts before Hawking really could get used to it.
Today Hawking uses adaptive software to guess words developed by the British company SwiftKey, that after writing the letter can select the correct word. Previously, the physicist had to reach the bottom of the screen and select a word from a list. The new version of the interface, called ACAT, contain contextual menus that supply the physics shortcuts speaking, search or send an email. Even contains an interesting feature that allows it to exclude speech synthesizer while eating, for example. One of his students – Jonathan Wood – however, admits to Wired, the scientist that likes to leave it on purpose, to create arbitrary speech. Wood remembers a case in which Hokint arbitrarily introduced xxxx and synthesizer speech sounded four times the word “sex sex sex sex.”
Intel did not stop there. The company continues to develop new technologies to help Hawking, including camera, allowing the introduction of words with movements in other parts of the face except the cheeks or a joystick attached to his chin, which allows him to move his wheelchair himself. Both devices, however, are still in the experimental phase. Wood currently trying to create a software-version of a speech synthesizer, so you do not have to use the professor “ancient” CallText 5010 – synthesizer, Hawking who received in 1988 the company Speech Plus.
Interestingly, when I received this synthesizer in 88th year, Hawking’s voice sounds different, so he asks Speech Plus to his previous return. His original voice is created in the early 80s by MIT engineer Dennis Klatt and creator of DECtalk – one of the first devices that convert text to speech. Klatt initially create three different voices, recording his wife, child and himself. The female voice is called “Beautiful Betty” child “kit child” and male “Perfect Paul”. Stephen Hawking today enjoys “Perfect Paul.”http://szlifestyle.com/sz/2015/01/24/how-intel-give-voice-to-stephen-hawking/https://i1.wp.com/szlifestyle.com/sz/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/sz_stephen_hawking.jpg?fit=340%2C462https://i1.wp.com/szlifestyle.com/sz/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/sz_stephen_hawking.jpg?resize=150%2C150TECH NEWSintel,Technology'Do not you want a real computer?'
