Revenues from tablets in the US fell by 8% during the period that marks the beginning of the school year – traditionally strong in this type of device. While the data released by the LA Times, to refer only to the US market, this is another proof that the product category is facing difficult times. Something that was expected.

During this period, sales increased by 3.5%. According to research firm NPD Group that shows that consumers are increasingly serious interest in budget models. The bad news does not end here, as in the autumn season (for the last eight weeks) sales fell 16 percent and revenue – by 18%. This trend is seen in both the Android models and those with iOS – a decline in revenue by 16%. Models with Windows even in a weaker position – a decline of 23% in sales, but there is good news – a jump in revenue of 11%. The latter is a result mostly from sales of Surface Pro 3, which is available in the US for $ 799. Even the presentation of the new iPad models failed to change the numbers, but analysts say it all bodes very weak sales in the holiday period.

Last eight weeks have been the worst for tablets with Android, as demand for 7-inch models fell by 40%. This is a normal consequence caused by the strong presence of smart phones. Negative statistics are observed in larger screens. There seriously revenues fall as the market go more budget models equipped with a large screen, but traded for under $200. The result – 49% of the market share for these models compared to 15% a year ago. When things such development was observed in a large and mature market such as the US, we can expect something similar with other markets of this type.
