Whether you shoot with a professional camera or with your smartphone, whether you do it or just amateur really interested in the depth of photography, fireworks are one of the mandatory objects of attention.

Taking them, however, is not so difficult as everyone think. Just instead of directions to try different settings at the time of the event.

Here are some guidelines for taking fireworks shots with compact and professional cameras, as well as a smartphone. After these brief guidelines not only consider themselves fireworks in the sky, but also for their composition in the urban landscape.

The good thing for taking such a light show is that it usually happens the holidays and we advance to prepare for this. Stand on a suitable position a little earlier. When shooting fireworks, the most important investment is a tripod – both professional and non-professional cameras and smartphones. There are different options and at least here you have a wide range of choice. The important thing is to keep your camera as static because it is and take longer to close their lens to catch the light, which in this case is less. You can also use the self-timer on your camera or your smartphone, leaving them on a tripod and set them certain seconds in which to shoot, to avoid blur.

Smartphone

Once you have stabilized your smartphone, there are a few tricks to make sure the quality of the photos. Most important is to turn off the flash and make sure that you have not activated HDR mode. If your phone has a default mode for night shooting or even more specifically for fireworks – then you can take advantage of them. If possible, set and lock the focus with the option AE / AF, and then take a few photos to see if this is enough. Smartphones that have options for exposure in your camera will give you more control. So you can adjust the ISO settings to a lower value like 100 or 200 units and focus set to approximately the same distance, whatever will be, and fireworks.

If your aperture is fixed, then the shutter speed should be slightly faster than the DSLR-camera to avoid blur. Experiment with exposure 1sec. – Increased and decreased as necessary to capture light traces of fireworks.

If you do not have manual settings on your smartphone, you can try these apps: Camera + for iOS, Camera FV-5 for Android or CameraPro for Windows Phone – they will give you more flexibility in settings. Another very viable option is to make a video of the fireworks and light show and then get pictures of it. Maybe the quality is not the maximum, but it will keep both video and photos of the light show. On the market are already small lenses for cameras smartphone for those who want to achieve a better effect.

In compact camera

There’s a lot to clarify when it comes to compact camera unless it allows you to control exposure. If so – you can read the section settings for DSLR cameras, which are described further down. Otherwise, we can only recommend you to try a different program modes that have your camera and choose the best. Normally, this is dedicated to the nocturnal landscapes with the flash off. If you have the option to adjust the focus yourself, use it.

In dSLR cameras

Learn to feel comfortable, use full manual mode. Set the camera to work with manual focus and leave it there while you shoot fireworks. Aperture should be around f / 8 to f/11, ISO-until then – 100-400 depend of the distance if the fireworks are near use lowest ISO available. The speed should be of short duration a few seconds to be able to capture light effects. You can try 3 to 4 seconds duration even more. To avoid camera shake and not to spoil frames used mode Self or remote button for this purpose.

Another option is to use bulb mode, which keeps the camera lens open, and while holding the button. In this case it is best to use a remote trigger to avoid camera shake affect of keeping the camera in your hands in the photos. Remember that if you are shooting Raw, you will be able to restore some of the details in the slides.

As a final will only complement, not to rely on just a few frames, and make a lot of those to choose the best of then, but of course, do not forget to enjoy the show with your own eyes.
